In October 2011 a total of some 250 Koalas from French Island were taken to Kurth Kiln Regional Park and released there, to relief the environmental pressure on the overpopulated island. One trailer full was released on Thursday 20 October on Scout Camp Track. Some of the Koalas stayed around the Kiln site, whilst others looked for a new home further afield. The Koalas seem to have favourite trees, and on most days one has a good chance to see them sitting high up in them, just sleeping or watching the activities on the ground below them.
Picnickers, campers, tourists, school and other groups love to spot them. When a Koala comes down to the ground and moves from one tree to another, word spreads around like magic at the kiln site and visitors hurry to the spot with their kids and cameras.
